Project Description

Openwork : work constructed so as to show openings through its substance; ornamental work in cloth, metal, leather, or other material with regular patterns of openings and holes.

The commission is to provide an ancillary building on a cottage property for a new workshop, yoga studio, wood shed, and viewing platform.

Due to the site and proposed building location the project should be linear for access purposes, lifted off the ground to minimize impact to the natural sloped landscape, and be simply assembled. The building should not feel like a solid barrier on top of the hill but as a sequence of different patterned openings along its functional and spatial components. This would enable qualities such as sunlight, air, and nature to move through the building and be experienced from the cottage and shoreline below during the day and a night.

Due to water access requirements a 4’ – 0” x 8’ – 0” modular is proposed to maximize the use of dimensional lumber, minimize on site cutting, and facilitate material transportation.
